So we can celebrate virtually, LGBTQ Nation asked our readers to share a photo with us from the first time they went to Pride. Submissions poured in from around the world, spanning every year from 1970 to 2019.

We’ve selected 30 of our favorite photos and stories so we can celebrate with a Pride In Pictures special series and we’ll be sharing them with you every day this month.

What makes this photo special to you?

“This is from a Bank Holiday Saturday in August 2016 – Sophie turned 16 that week, and at last was comfortable and proud to be a gay young woman. As her granny, this moment was so special.

“The following year, 2017, we returned from Manchester Pride – and Sophie was determined to have a local Pride in our small town. So, together with her mum and I, plus local youth services and volunteers, the first Pride in Macclesfield – MaccPride – was held on July 28, 2018.

“This shy young woman founded what is now a growing event and registered charity… and the 3 ‘Gs’ of MaccPride continues. You bet, I’m the most proud Granny and mother.”
