A 45-year-old parent of a queer child, Audra Beasley, was arrested after calling Oklahoma’s anti-LGBTQ+ head of schools, Ryan Walter, “an obnoxious bigot and bully” during a recent meeting of the State Board of Education.
“You make a fool out of yourself,” she said. “You come in here and you talk about Title IX and our president. You are making a complete fool of yourself…. It is none of your business what gender that child or what gender is on their birth certificate…. You are an embarrassment to Oklahoma. You are a downright embarrassment to Oklahoma. And you wear the same damn clothes all the time too — why is that?”

The decision took place at the church’s General Conference, where the delegates voted 692-51 to remove the ban. The Methodist Church has been moving toward LGBTQ+-inclusivity for a long time now, so much so that in November 2023, 261 Georgia congregations left the church because it was not anti-LGBTQ+ enough.

Two transphobic bills died in the Mississippi legislature after Republican lawmakers were unable to find a compromise on their provisions before a Monday deadline. One bill would have forced trans people to use facilities in public buildings that match the gender listed on their birth certificates, and the other would have established that “there are only two sexes… male or female” and that one’s sex is defined at birth.
