Drag superstar Trixie Mattel, who goes by Brian Firkus out of drag, discussed the time she got in trouble on Instagram for calling gay whales “fa***ts.”

“I’ve gotten in trouble on Instagram for things that I should not have been in trouble for,” Trixie said during a recent episode of The Bald and the Beautiful, which is her and drag queen Katya Zamolodchikova’s podcast. “Like when I called those whales fa***ts.”

She was referring to a news item from February, which involved humpback whales. The species was spotted engaging in sexual congress for the first time, and it was a tryst between two male whales.

“Me in drag calling two whales fa***ts,” Trixie, who is a cis gay man out of drag, said sarcastically. “Those whales don’t even have Instagram. They’re not even going to hear about it.”

That’s when Katya realized that Trixie was talking about whales, the animal, and not mocking fat people.
