Conservative media and influencers are outraged after a queer Biden administration staffer got a promotion.

Tyler Cherry used to work as the Interior Department’s communications director and was recently hired as part of the White House’s communications team. Fox News ran a story on Friday about his promotion that used a picture of Cherry wearing a fishnet top with rose petals on him, even though that is not an official photo of him at work. They also posted a picture of him wearing a white sleeveless top with oversized gold-colored jewelry.

The article itself focused on Cherry’s old social media posts, accusing him of being “anti-Israel” because he tweeted support for “#FreePalestine” in 2014. Fox also criticized Cherry for posting about the death of Freddie Gray, a Black man in Baltimore who was killed while in police custody in 2015.

Fox wasn’t the only conservative outlet outraged at the Biden administration for Cherry’s promotion.

“Tyler Cherry, who identifies as non-binary is: Anti-Israel; Pro-Palestinian ‘Resistance’; Anti-Police; Anti-Capitalism; Pro-BLM; Calls to Abolish the Police; Supports extreme antisemite Linda Sarsour calling her a ‘fierce Muslim woman.’; Wants to stop all arms shipments to Israel,” anti-trans activist Oli London – a white conservative influencer who once got plastic surgery in an attempt to look more Korean – wrote about Cherry, posting a picture of Cherry wearing a dress and earrings.

While that post had an argument that was ostensibly about policy, most of London’s posts about Cherry over the past several days have just been pictures of Cherry with a call to mock him.

“Why does Biden always hire Gay or Trans? The world is laughing at us,” a self-described “MAGA FBJ TRUCK DRIVER” X user posted.

The National Review, a conservative publication, also ran a photo of Cherry at a Pride celebration wearing earrings under a headline that accused him of making “Radical Anti-Cop, Anti-Israel Tweets.”

Another person posted pictures of Cherry and wrote: “THE WHITE HOUSE FALLEN… UNITED STATES OF GAYS.”

Another user of the platform said it’s “too late to backpedal Tyler Cherry. You’ve been exposed as a horrible human who has no respect for law enforcement or decency. Resign.”

On X, Cherry disavowed the old tweets in a blanket statement: “Past social media posts from when I was younger do not reflect my current views. Period. I support this Administration’s agenda – and will continue my communications work focused on our climate and environmental policies.”

This is not the first time that the right has been outraged at the relatively obscure Biden administration staffer. Last year, hate influencer Chaya Raichik – who posts on X under the name “Libs of Tiktok” – called Cherry a “total weirdo” and posted a picture of him wearing earrings and a striped jacket.

“Biden admin try not to hire total weirdos challenge = impossible,” she wrote in sharing the picture. She also shared a post from someone pointing out that Cherry criticized the police last decade.

“No one should be targeted simply for being themselves. It is cruel and unacceptable,” a White House spokesperson said at the time. “This is an administration that believes to our core in the principle that out of many we are one — and we are proud that the people who serve in it reflect those values as well. Tyler is an invaluable member of our team who continues to deliver for the Department of Interior and the American people.”
