Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) responded to criticisms of the Republican party’s opposition to free school lunches by accusing Democrats of wanting to put “gay porn” in schools.

Ohio state Rep. Casey Weinstein (D) posted a message over the weekend to X that said: “Things that don’t belong in our public school classrooms: 1) Hungry kids going without food 2) The Ten Commandments.” He was referring to Louisiana’s new mandate that the Ten Commandments be shown in all public school classrooms.

It is unclear if he was referring to any specific policy with his first item, but earlier this year, House Republicans proposed banning states from offering universal free school lunches, which eight states currently do. Also, earlier this year, over a dozen Republican governors – including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantisrejected federal aid to provide food for children from low-income families during the summer.

Weinstein’s call to feed hungry children apparently upset Greene, who responded: “Democrat education platform: 1) ban the Ten Commandments in schools. 2) stock the elementary school libraries’ shelves with gay porn.”

There are no school libraries that stock gay pornographic materials, but many on the right refer to many books with LGBTQ+ themes as pornography.

“MAGA education platform: 1) Defund public education thru vouchers 2) Bring guns into classrooms 3) Debate whether the Holocaust happened (see SB83),” Weinstein, who is Jewish, responded. Ohio’s S.B. 83 requires schools to “ensure the fullest degree of intellectual diversity,” something that the ACLU of Ohio argues would make schools teach “both sides” of issues like “U.S. slavery and the Jewish Holocaust.”
