Out gay Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) called out far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for refusing to call infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci a “doctor” during a House hearing about the United States COVID-19 pandemic response earlier today. Greene also demanded that Fauci be prosecuted for “crimes against humanity.”

Right-wing Republicans have long blamed Fauci for the shutdowns, face mask mandates, and vaccine policies during the height of the pandemic, even though all of these occurred under a Republican President Donald Trump. Greene has been one of the most vocal critics of Fauci and used the Monday hearing to insult and criticize the now-retired former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in his first public appearance on Capitol Hill since his 2022 retirement.

Greene’s questioning of Fauci began with her accusing him of “signing off” on medical experiments on dogs, something she has used to demonize Fauci before even though dogs and lots of other animals are regularly used in pharmaceutical research.

Fauci responded, “What do dogs have to do with anything we’re talking about today?”

Greene then mentioned reports that the National Institutes of Health received $710 million in pharmaceutical company royalties since the start of the pandemic.

“Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, Mr. Fauci? Because you’re not [a] doctor,” she said. “You’re Mr. Fauci in my few minutes.”

At this point, committee member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) criticized Greene, asking, “In terms of the rules of decorum, are we allowed to deny a doctor is a doctor just because we don’t want him to be a doctor?”

Greene responded, “Yes, because in my time, that man does not deserve to have a license. As a matter of fact, it should be revoked and he belongs in prison!”

Garcia, who lost two parents to COVID, apologized to Fauci during the hearing, saying, “Dr. Fauci, I am so sorry you just had to sit through that. That was completely irresponsible. This might be the most insane hearing I’ve actually attended! I’ve only been in Congress for a year and a half, but I am so sorry that you are subjected to this level of attacks and insanity.”

In a tweet later, Garcia wrote, “Totally insane that Marjorie Taylor Greene would not refer to Dr. Fauci as a doctor. He’s one of the most brilliant medical minds in the country. She’s a national embarrassment.”
