MAGA pastor says Ten Commandments in schools will stop teachers from “raping” kids

Jack Hibbs — an anti-LGBTQ+ pastor who is also a supporter of former President Donald Trump — recently praised policies forcing the Ten Commandments into public school classrooms because the Biblical list will ensure “teachers are not going to be raping kids anymore.”

Hibbs’s comments echo other right-wing claims of teachers, LGBTQ+ people, and allies “sexualizing” and “grooming” children for sex abuse. His comments also ignore the thousands of cases of child sex abuse that have occurred in Catholic and Baptist churches since 2000 — most of which have been covered up by church leadership, despite the Ten Commandments being widely available in Christian houses of worship.

“If [The 10 Commandments are] obeyed, everybody’s going to live, nobody’s going to get murdered, and kids are going to stop lying about what happened to their homework, and teachers are not going to be raping kids anymore,” Hibbs said in a recent broadcast.

His comments alluded to a recent Louisiana law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in all classrooms within schools and universities that receive state funding. Critics say the law violates the Constitution’s First Amendment, which forbids the government from establishing a state religion.

Weeks after the passage of Louisiana’s law, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, the state’s top education official, issued a directive requiring all public schools to teach the Bible and the Ten Commandments.

Walters recently defended his directive, telling PBS News Hour, “We will make sure that our kids in Oklahoma understand American history. We will not be censored by left-wing extremists who don’t want the Bible mentioned in our classroom.”

Hibbs and other right-wing and evangelical leaders have repeatedly claimed that LGBTQ+-inclusive educators are “grooming” kids for sexual abuse. Just last year, Hibbs said that “Satan himself” planned the “transgender agenda.” He said that teachers should out LGBTQ+ students to their parents in order to fight the “demonic and dark satanic powers” in public schools that are “sexualizing” and “mentally abusing” children.

Despite their claimed desire to protect children, leaders like Hibbs rarely mention the widespread sexual abuse happening in Christian churches.

Numerous reports have cited literally hundreds of thousands of instances of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church dating at least as far back as the 1950s. A 2022 report also found that hundreds of child sex abuse incidents within Southern Baptist churches had occurred over the last 20 years. Both denominations spent millions hiding the incidents from the public while allowing pedophile religious leaders to continue having access to children.

Hibbs is a self-described Christian Nationalist who preaches at the Calvary Chapel megachurch in Chino Hills, California. In November 2020, Hibbs got on his knees, cried, and led his congregation in prayer — he refused to accept that year’s presidential election results because Trump lost.

Four months before Trump’s loss, Hibbs appeared in the film Trump 2024: The World After Trump, among a veritable Who’s Who of anti-LGBTQ+ pastors, politicians, and pundits. Collectively, they discussed why Trump is the only way to stop the New World Order, globalists, and socialism (common dog whistles for immigrants, Jews, and taxes).

Hibbs has attacked transgender people and described opposition to religious liberty as “fascism.” He has claimed that trans people are causing inflation and trying to turn people into machines. He also said that China would take over Taiwan because an American high school hosted a drag show.

In January, Republicans invited Hibbs to serve as the guest chaplain of the House of Representatives and lead a prayer in the lower congressional chamber.
