Hurricane Helene has caused widespread destruction in Georgia. Yet in the midst of the crisis ravaging her state, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) seems to have prioritized making time to threaten the rights of transgender youth.

As aid efforts continue in her state, Greene took to X yesterday to promote her Protect Children’s Innocence Act, which she touted would “END barbaric genital mutilation surgeries on kids” (even though such surgeries aren’t conducted as part of gender-affirming care for trans minors).

The legislation would make it a Class C felony to provide gender-affirming care to trans minors, ban medical schools from teaching about gender-affirming care, and make it more difficult for trans adults to access gender-affirming care by banning some healthcare programs from covering it.

“If they’re too young to vote or enlist in our military, they’re certainly too young to make such an irreversible and life-altering decision,” she wrote.

The post also included a video of Greene speaking to an audience about the bill in which she refers to a “radical gender industry” that is allegedly forcing minors into gender-affirming surgery for profit.

In reality, gender-affirming surgery is almost never performed on minors, and the gender-affirming care trans youth do receive is often reversible. Study after study has also shown that trans youth mental health significantly improves when they have access to this critical care.

“Hurricane Helene hit Georgia and you’re babbling about kids’ genitals,” one user wrote in response. “Sickening.”

In addition to disparaging gender-affirming care, Greene has also devoted time this week to spreading a conspiracy theory about Hurricane Helene.

“Yes, they can control the weather,” Greene posted on Thursday. “It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done.”

The post was vague but likely meant to imply that the Democrats created this hurricane and sent it to wreak havoc upon Southern states. In reality, it’s impossible for humans to create hurricanes on demand.

She recently doubled down on this accusation, claiming to have “proof” in the form of Obama-era CIA Director John Brennan talking about small-scale innovations to curtail climate change — not about the government being able to produce massive natural disasters.

To recap: Not only has Georgia been ravaged by Hurricane Helene, which has also left at least 33 Georgians dead, but Greene also believes the Democrats made it happen. Yet, she is still making sure to squeeze in time to attack trans kids.
