Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) – an evangelical Christian who has his teen son monitor his internet usage to keep himself from viewing adult content online – got visibly miffed on CNN this weekend when a journalist tried to get him to explain Donald Trump’s bizarre comments about a golfer’s penis.

“Don’t say it again,” Johnson snapped at CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union yesterday. “We don’t have to say it!”

At issue were comments Trump made at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday during one of his rambling sessions where he discussed late pro golfer Arnold Palmer at length before discussing the size of his genitalia.

“Arnold Palmer was all man,” Trump said at the rally. “And I say that in all due respect to women, and I love women. But this guy, this guy, this is a guy that was all man. This man was strong and tough.”

“And I refuse to say it,” Trump said before he just said it, “but when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, ‘Oh my god, that’s unbelievable.’”

“I had to say it. I had to say it. We have women that are highly sophisticated here, but they used to look at Arnold.”

“And I had to tell you the shower part of it, because it’s true. What can I tell you? We want to be upfront, we want to be honest.”

On Sunday, Tapper brought up the comments while interviewing Johnson. By then, clips of Trump’s comments about Palmer had already gone viral on social media.

“Donald Trump’s campaign suggested he would begin previewing his closing argument Saturday night with Election Day barely two weeks away,” Tapper said. “But the former president kicked off his rally with a detailed story about Arnold Palmer, at one point even praising the late, legendary golfer’s genitalia.”

“Is this really the closing message you want voters to hear from Donald Trump? Stories about Arnold Palmer’s penis?”

Johnson did not want to talk about Trump’s comments but was also unwilling to criticize Trump for making it a part of the election news cycle. So he instead attacked Vice President Kamala Harris: “I think that the headline that I read about the rally in Pennsylvania yesterday was the big question, and it’s the one that Kamala Harris has not been able or willing to answer. And that is, are you better off now than you were under the Trump administration four years ago?”

Tapper responded by pointing out that if President Joe Biden had made similar comments to Trump, Johnson would “be on this show right now saying you were shocked and appalled, and you would suggest it was evidence of his cognitive decline.” Tapper brought up a New York Times article that compared Trump’s speeches from 2015 to this year and noted that his rhetoric has changed and that he has gotten “angrier, less focused, more profane, and increasingly fixated on the past.”

“Why is he talking about Arnold Palmer’s penis in front of Pennsylvania voters?” Tapper asked.

“Jake, you seem to like that line a lot,” Johnson replied and forced a chuckle, even though he didn’t seem to find the discussion amusing at all. “Let me tell you that Donald Trump is doing rallies around the country to say something.”

The two talked over one another, arguing about whether people should be discussing Trump’s comments on Palmer, and Johnson tried to end the argument by saying he’ll “address it.” Tapper stopped talking and let Johnson address it.

“Don’t say it again,” Johnson said. “I get it, there’s lines in a rally when President Trump is at a rally, sometimes he’ll speak for two straight hours. You’re questioning his stamina? His mental acuity? Joe Biden couldn’t do that for five minutes!”

He said that Biden couldn’t get as many people to go to his rallies if he were holding them and said that Tapper “can cherry pick, you know, a few words or lines out of a two-hour event” and claimed that the same could be done with Harris’ rallies “because she does word salads and she couldn’t, she couldn’t hold court like that without a teleprompter.”

Tapper then brought up Trump’s statements that he would use the military and the national guard to imprison leftists. Johnson lied and said that Trump was talking about gangs and Tapper said, “Nope,” and played another clip where Trump named Democrats he wanted to imprison, including Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Arnold Palmer’s daughter, Peggy Palmer, criticized Trump for his comments.

“I thought it was an unfortunate way to remember my dad,” she told The Independent.

“My father was very modest. We’ve lost our sense of outrage in this country over just about everything, and I’m not sure that’s OK… There are other things about my dad that would be better to focus on.”
